Introducing Pass Me The Remote

Pass Me The Remote is a series of letters, born from the strange sense of loss that comes when a show you have loved comes to an end. For me, television has never just been television.

My name is Khadijah. My mother named me after Queen Latifah’s character, Khadijah James, on Living Single. Before I could choose what I wanted to watch, TV was a part of my identity.

The idea was inspired by the director’s notes I write for my own creative projects—a space for the person behind the work to articulate their vision, intentions, and hopes for what they have created. Pass Me The Remote takes that same approach and turns it outward: a space to reflect on and articulate my relationship to the work that has influenced, inspired, and stayed with me.

The title comes from the familiar words our grandparents would say when it was time to watch their stories: Pass me the remote. Each letter begins with “To Whom It May Concern,” a nod to the notes our parents wrote to our schools when we were kids, and ends with “Forever Grateful,” because that is what these letters are: gratitude.

These letters aren’t my attempt to give the definitive take on a show. They are not reviews, recaps, or arguments about whether something was objectively good.

It's applause, gratitude, and celebration.
